Quick Verdict

Two small dogs, one white bedroom, and stairs that don’t look like ugly pet stairs. After about 30 minutes of setup and a few treats, both dogs climb up to my daughter’s bed on their own. That’s the whole reason I bought it.

I Was Tired of Two Dogs Barking at the Bed

My two small dogs could not get onto my daughter’s bed without barking or launching themselves at it. That’s the problem I set out to fix, and the PetFusion Pet Step Window Perch Bookshelf ended up being the answer. Most pet steps for cats and small dogs look like something you’d hide in a closet. This one looks like a piece of furniture I actually wanted in the room.

I went in skeptical. Furniture-style pet stairs usually mean you pay extra for looks and lose the function. That’s not what happened here, and the mix of low steps, storage, and a window perch is what won me over.

What You’re Setting Up

Out of the box you get a white-and-grey unit, slim bookshelf profile, two carpeted 8″ steps, a 20″ x 12″ padded perch, and two fabric storage baskets. At 11.75″ deep it sits flush against a wall without eating floor space. PetFusion rates each perch and shelf at 30 lbs and the whole structure at 100 lbs total, which is plenty for small dogs and cats and a hard stop for anything larger.

The steps use removable carpeted pads held on with Velcro, and the perch has a 1″ foam pad with a waterproof cover. Both the covers and the step pads are machine washable, hang dry. That matters more than the marketing makes it sound, which I’ll get to.

Both Dogs Use It Every Day Now

Both dogs use it every day now because of the 8″ step height, low enough for confident climbing without scrambling or slipping. My dogs never hesitated on the climb the way they did with a taller stool. Two low, carpeted steps meant they got traction instead of scrambling, and neither one slipped once during the first week.

It took a little training to get there. I sat by the steps with treats and walked them up a few times. After about 30 minutes total across the first day, they had it. Now they both use it to get onto the bed without me in the room, which was the entire goal.

The window perch surprised me. It’s marketed as a calming spot, and one of my dogs took to lounging up there next to the window instead of only using it as a staircase. So it pulls double duty as stairs and a chill-out perch.

The Setup Takes Longer Than You Think

Assembly takes roughly 30 minutes, real furniture-level build with panels and hardware, not a five-minute unfold. This is a real piece of furniture with a shelf, baskets, and step pads, so there are panels and hardware to work through. It’s not hard, it’s just not instant, and if you were expecting to unfold it and walk away, that’s the gotcha.

The other thing worth knowing: your pet probably won’t march up it the moment it’s built. Mine needed treats and a couple of guided trips before they trusted it. If you skip that step and just plop it by the bed, don’t be shocked if the dogs ignore it the first day.

Who This Is Right For

My use case was two small dogs and one tall bed, and it solved both problems in the same footprint. The two storage baskets swallowed the leashes, treats, and a chew toy that used to live on the floor, stuff I was glad to get off the ground without adding a separate bin.

It’s built for people who care how their bedroom looks. In a white or neutral room it disappears into the decor. If you have a big, heavy dog, look elsewhere, since the perch is rated for 30 lbs and this is aimed at the small end of the pet-steps-for-bed crowd.

The Velcro Pads Are Smarter Than They Sound

The removable Velcro step pads are the quiet win: when they get dirty, you peel them off and machine wash them, which a basic foam stool doesn’t offer. A cheap stool is faster to set up and costs less, no question. But it also sits in your room like an eyesore and gives you nothing to clean with when a dog tracks mud up the steps.

That washability matters more in practice than it sounds on paper. After two weeks of daily dog traffic the step pads had visible paw grime, I peeled them off, ran them through the machine, and had them back on same day. A plain foam stool doesn’t give you that option; you’re wiping it down with a damp cloth and hoping for the best.

Advice Before You Buy

Before assembly, have treats ready and plan 30 quiet minutes, guided training on day one is what turns hesitant pets into daily users. Do the guided training the same day you build it, that’s what turned my dogs from hesitant to daily users. The layout is reversible, so figure out which side of the bed it lives on before you lock in the baskets.

One more tip: keep the step pads on tight. Press the Velcro down firmly so an excited dog doesn’t shift a pad mid-climb. Little thing, easy to fix, worth checking every so often.

Pros

  • Looks like real furniture and blends into a white or neutral room
  • Low 8″ carpeted steps gave my dogs solid traction, no slipping
  • Two storage baskets hide toys, leashes, and pet gear
  • Removable Velcro step pads and perch cover are machine washable
  • Window perch doubles as a calm lounging spot

Cons

  • Assembly runs about 30 minutes, not a quick unfold
  • Pets need treat training before they’ll use it confidently
  • 30 lb per-perch limit rules out large or heavy dogs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do pet steps for cats work with this too, or is it only for dogs?

It works for cats too. PetFusion designed the 28″ window perch specifically for cats and small dogs, and the low 8″ steps suit either. My review is dog-based, but the perch and reduced-anxiety angle are aimed squarely at cats.

How much weight can it actually hold?

Each perch and shelf is rated for 30 lbs, with 100 lbs total across the whole unit. That’s plenty for small and medium pets but not built for a large dog. Stay under those numbers.

Can I wash the steps and perch pad?

Yes. The step pads and perch cover are machine washable, then hang dry. The pads attach with Velcro so you can peel them off without disassembling the whole unit.

Will it fit against a wall without taking over the room?

It’s only 11.75″ deep and 38.5″ long, so it sits against a wall like a slim bookshelf. The layout is also reversible, which helps you fit it to either side of a bed or couch.

Does it come assembled?

No, you build it. Expect roughly 30 minutes with the included hardware. It’s straightforward, just not a fold-and-go unit.

Are the steps slippery on the pet’s feet?

No, the steps are carpeted for grip and mine never slipped. The rubber feet also keep the whole unit from sliding on hard floors while a pet climbs.

What if my pet won’t use it right away?

Use treats and walk them up a few times the first day. Both of mine needed about 30 minutes of gentle training before they climbed on their own. It’s normal for a pet to hesitate on anything new near the bed.

Can I use it as a window perch instead of bed stairs?

Yes. The 28″ padded perch is meant to sit by a window for a calm view spot, and it works standalone. One of my dogs uses it more for lounging than climbing.

Loses half a star for the 30-minute build and the treat training your pet will need before it clicks. Skip it if you own a dog over 30 lbs, since the perch won’t take the weight. Faster assembly and one more grippy step would make this a five for anyone with small dogs and a tall bed.
