DIGIERA 2TB Magnetic Portable SSD Review

A magnetic SSD that clips to an iPhone 15 or 16 and records 4K ProRes straight to the drive. Here is what the specs support and who it suits.

The DIGIERA 2TB Magnetic Portable SSD is worth buying if you shoot 4K ProRes on an iPhone 15 or 16 and keep running out of room. It records straight to the drive at rated speeds up to 2000MB/s. Skip it if your phone is an iPhone 14 or older, because it will not work at all.

Quick Verdict

2TB, 2000MB/s rated read, and a magnet strong enough that the drive rides on the back of the phone while you walk. That combination is the whole pitch, and it only pays off if you shoot ProRes on an iPhone 15 or newer.

Buy if you:

  • shoot 4K 60p or 4K 120p ProRes on an iPhone 15/16 Pro and fill the phone in a single shoot
  • film handheld and moving, where a dangling drive on a cable is a liability
  • also edit on a USB-C laptop, iPad or console and want one drive for all of it
  • want 2TB in something small enough to live in a jacket pocket

ProRes Eats a Phone Alive

DIGIERA 2TB Magnetic Portable SSD Review — photo 1

4K ProRes on an iPhone burns through storage faster than almost anything else a phone can do. That is the exact problem the DIGIERA 2TB Magnetic Portable SSD exists to solve. Instead of recording internally and then shuffling files off later, the iPhone 15 and 16 Pro models can write 4K 60p or 4K 120p ProRes directly onto the drive.

So the storage math changes. You are not deciding which clips to sacrifice at the end of a shoot. You are shooting until 2TB runs out, which for most people is not going to happen in one day.

The magnet is the other half. Plenty of drives will do this over a cable. Very few of them stay put on the back of the phone while you walk, talk to camera, or chase a subject through the woods. DIGIERA’s own framing of that use case is the one: the point is that the thing does not swing around and drop.

Plug It In. That’s Setup.

There’s no app, no account and no formatting ritual described anywhere in the listing. It’s plug-and-play over USB-C, and the included cable is what connects the drive to the phone even though the magnet is what holds it there. That distinction trips people up, so it’s worth being clear: the magnet is a mount, not a data connection.

Which means the cable is a real part of the daily experience. Short cable, clean setup. A long one and you’re back to a loop of slack hanging off your rig.

What 2000MB/s Costs You in Hardware

The 2000MB/s figure is conditional, and the condition matters more than the number. DIGIERA specifies USB-C 3.2 Gen 2×2 to reach it, and that standard is not on most Macs or on the iPhone itself. Connect it to a typical laptop port and you will see a real but lower figure, which the listing admits outright rather than burying.

That’s fine for this job. ProRes recording doesn’t need 2000MB/s. Where the headroom actually pays off is the transfer after the shoot, if you own a machine capable of feeding it. So read the spec as ceiling-not-promise and you won’t be disappointed.

On price: the 2TB listing moves enough that the capacity sweet spot can shift. The 1TB and 4TB versions don’t always track together, so check the live price across all four capacities before you commit, the math on cost-per-GB changes depending on the day.

Ownership Costs After the Purchase

Close to nothing, and that’s the appeal of an SSD over a cloud plan. No subscription, no monthly storage fee, no consumables. The aluminum casing is rated to 1500G shock and 10 to 2000Hz vibration, so it’s designed to go in a bag rather than a padded case.

The one item you’ll eventually replace is the USB-C cable. It’s the part doing the flexing every single time you mount and unmount, and it’s not proprietary, so that’s a cheap fix rather than a dead drive.

Where It Sits Against Other Magnetic SSD Options

The magnetic SSD category barely existed before ProRes external recording arrived on the iPhone 15. Samsung and SanDisk make excellent pocket SSDs, but they’re designed to sit on a desk or in a bag, not on the back of a phone. That’s why the magnetic ssd mount approach exists as its own niche now, and most of the entries in it are from brands you haven’t heard of.

A separate magnetic mount plus a standard SSD is often cheaper, but you’re adding height to the stack and introducing a part that can be left on a desk the morning you need it most. DIGIERA bakes the magnet into the aluminum shell, so the drive is the mount, one piece, nothing to assemble.

Android users searching for a magnetic ssd for android should note the compatibility line carefully. The drive works with most USB-C phones as storage, but the magnet expects a magnetic ring on the back of the phone, which most Android handsets don’t have without a case.

Pick the Capacity Before You Pick the Drive

Check your iPhone model first, then pick a size. Anything before the 15 series is a hard no per DIGIERA’s own note, and that includes the iPhone 14 Pro, which is the one people get wrong. Four capacities exist: 512GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB. If ProRes is your reason for buying, 512GB is going to feel small fast. 2TB is the sensible middle.

Pros

  • Records 4K 60p and 4K 120p ProRes directly to the drive on supported iPhones
  • Integrated magnet instead of a separate mount, so nothing to assemble or lose
  • Rated to 1500G shock in a rugged aluminum shell
  • Plug-and-play across laptops, tablets and consoles with no app or account
  • Four capacities up to 4TB

Cons

  • iPhone 14 and older are excluded entirely, which cuts out a huge number of buyers
  • The 2000MB/s ceiling needs USB-C 3.2 Gen 2×2, which most host machines don’t provide
  • The magnet mounts it but doesn’t carry data, so you’re still managing a cable
  • Price swings widely, so buying on the wrong day costs you

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the magnet hold through a phone case?

It depends on case thickness and whether the case has its own magnet ring. Thin MagSafe-compatible cases pass magnetic force through fine. Thick rugged cases or anything with a metal plate in the back will weaken the hold.

Do I need to reformat it to work with a Mac and an iPhone?

DIGIERA lists it as plug-and-play, so it ships pre-formatted in a filesystem both can read. If you plan to write large files from a Mac as well, exFAT is the format that keeps both sides happy without reformatting again later.

Can I use it with a game console?

Yes, consoles are listed among the supported USB-C devices. Consoles usually require their own formatting step and may restrict which games can run from an external drive, so treat it as extra storage rather than a guaranteed play-from-drive solution.

Is there a monthly fee or subscription?

None. It’s a one-time hardware purchase with no account, no cloud tier and no software to license. That’s the main financial argument for a 2TB drive over expanding a cloud plan you pay for forever.

The half star comes off for the compatibility wall, since an iPhone 14 owner gets nothing here at all. Anyone shooting plain 4K instead of ProRes is overpaying for a magnet they don’t need. Support for older iPhones, or a bundled short cable long enough to survive daily mounting, would close the gap.

iPhone 15 or 16 Pro, shooting ProRes, running out of room mid-shoot: buy it. Everyone else, check the compatibility wall before you spend a dollar, because it is an absolute cutoff, not a caveat.
