ESR Equinox Band Apple Watch Strap Review

A burgundy rubber Apple Watch band with a two-button clasp that adjusts in seconds and still fits big wrists.

The ESR Equinox Band is worth buying if you want a burgundy Apple Watch band that matches the new iPhone 18 color and fits a big wrist. It’s HNBR rubber, fully adjustable with a lever, and two side buttons pop it open to get on and off. Skip it if you want leather.

I Bought Into a Color, Not a Band

I’m loving the new burgundy color on the iPhone 18, and that’s the whole reason the ESR Equinox Band ended up on my wrist. For full disclosure, ESR sent this one out so I could check it out for you guys. I didn’t go looking for a new strap. I went looking for something that matched.

Boom, bada boom, out of the package and there’s that nickel silver connector. Really cool. And yes, I’m still sporting an Apple Watch 4. I’m okay with that. I might get the new Ultra at some point, but this band is perfect for my 4 too, which is kind of the point of a band compatible Apple Watch accessory that covers 44mm all the way up to 49mm.

Rubber, Not Leather. Say It Out Loud.

This is a rubber band. It’s not leather, it’s not vegan leather. HNBR rubber with textured grooves and sweat channels, and I’d rather you know that upfront than be surprised when it shows up. The upside is maintenance basically disappears. Rinse it, wipe it, done. ESR rates it waterproof and abrasion resistant, so sweat and water aren’t the enemy here the way they are with a leather strap.

It flexes with your wrist instead of fighting it, closer to a silicone sport loop than a stiff rubber slab. For a band in this price range, that’s not a given.

What the Money Buys You in Apple Watch Bands

You’re paying for a stainless steel clasp and a color you can’t get from Apple without spending a lot more. That’s the pitch. Most cheap Apple Watch bands in this lane give you a plastic pin buckle that loosens and a color that’s close but not quite. This one uses a 316L stainless steel fold-over clasp, and the burgundy is dead-on with the ESR burgundy phone case line.

On pricing, it’s been sitting right around its normal level for the last three months and it’s close to the lowest it’s been tracked at, so there’s no obvious reason to sit around waiting for a drop. It’s also moving: Amazon has it at #6,936 in Cell Phones & Accessories against a 90 day average of #8,082, with 100+ bought in the past month. That’s a band selling better now than it was, which usually means the color is doing the work. Current pricing is on the product page.

Sizing It Took Me About Ten Seconds

There’s a little lever you pull up, and then the slider moves back and forth in the holes. That’s the whole adjustment. Once you pull it out of the hole you just slide it to your wrist size and drop it back in. That was really quick and easy to adjust, no tools, no sitting there with a pin pusher.

Clipping it onto the watch was the usual slide-and-click. Then two little buttons on the side open the clasp up wider so you can get it onto your wrist, and you close it back down after. I’m a big boy, got big wrists also, and I figured I’d have to open it all the way up. I didn’t. It fit and it felt pretty good.

ESR calls it memory retention, meaning once you size it, it stays sized. In practice that means you’re doing this once and then never thinking about it again.

The Clasp Is the Part I’d Buy It For

The thing that sold me: press both side buttons and the clasp opens wide, but the connector stays physically attached to the band, it can’t spring off your wrist, even if you hit the buttons by accident. It’s fully adjustable, but it’s not just going to fly off your wrist if you accidentally hit the buttons. That’s the difference between a band you trust and one you keep checking.

Rubber straps with a stainless clasp are also the combo that tends to survive. Nothing to crack, nothing to fade the way a coated silicone band fades, and the hardware is the part that takes the abuse.

The Gotcha: You’re Buying the Whole Color Story

Burgundy only works if the rest of your gear plays along, and that’s a real limitation. On my wrist next to the burgundy phone and the burgundy Find My wallet, the look is good. Alone with a plain black case it’s just a red-ish strap doing nothing for you.

ESR does make hybrid cases with burgundy accents, so you can run a black phone and still pick up the color. That’s the workaround, but it’s still a workaround. Also worth knowing before you order: this sizing starts at 44mm. If you’re on a 40mm or 41mm watch, this listing isn’t your band.

Two Thumbs Up, With One Condition

I give this a two thumbs up. Definitely love this combination. The adjustment lever is fast, the two-button clasp doesn’t let go, and the rubber feels good on skin all day instead of getting sticky.

The condition is the color. If you’re a color lover like me and you want matching phones and Apple watches to go with your outfit, this burgundy line does that better than anything Apple sells. If you don’t care about matching, you’re paying a color premium for nothing, there are cheaper HNBR bands without the burgundy tax. But if you’re building the ESR ecosystem look, nothing Apple sells gets you there at this price.

Pros

  • Lever adjustment sizes it in seconds, no tools
  • Connector doesn’t fully detach, so it won’t fly off your wrist
  • Two side buttons open the clasp wide for easy on and off
  • Rubber feels great on skin and moves well
  • Fits big wrists without maxing out the adjustment

Cons

  • It’s rubber, not leather or vegan leather, so the dressy look isn’t here
  • The burgundy only pays off if your case and accessories match it
  • Sizing starts at 44mm, so smaller watches are out

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work on older Apple Watch models?

Yes, it clipped straight onto my Apple Watch Series 4 with no adapter. The listing covers 44mm, 45mm, 46mm and 49mm, so any watch in those case sizes takes it regardless of how old it is.

Can I shower or swim in it?

ESR rates the band waterproof and lists saltwater surfing and muddy trails as fair use. The HNBR rubber and 316L steel buckle are the materials you’d want for that. Your watch’s own water rating is the limiting factor, not the strap.

How do I clean it?

Water and a wipe. The textured grooves and sweat channels on the underside are designed to shed moisture instead of trapping it, which is the main reason I’d take rubber over leather for daily wear.

Do I have to re-size it every time I take it off?

No. ESR builds in memory retention, so the fold-over clasp keeps your sized fit. You press the two side buttons to open it, slide it off, and the adjustment stays exactly where you set it.
