hykolity 4FT LED Shop Light Linkable Review

I swapped the old fluorescent tube over my workbench for the hykolity 4FT LED Shop Light Linkable. Bright, cheap, light build.

The hykolity 4FT LED Shop Light Linkable is worth buying if you want a cheap, bright workbench or shed light you can plug in and forget. 4400 lumens at 42W, flush mounted in minutes. The build is light, not heavy-duty. Buy it for a garage, not a commercial shop.

The Old Fluorescent Tube Finally Went

My workbench fluorescent finally died after years of flicker and dim light, so I swapped it for this LED. Old technology, dim, and I didn’t want to keep feeding it. So I pulled it and put up the hykolity 4FT LED Shop Light Linkable instead. I flush mounted it right over the bench, plugged it in, pulled the chain, and the whole workspace lit up. The brightness is what stands out. 4400 lumens in a 42W fixture is a lot of light for a workbench area, and it’s daylight white at 5000K, so nothing on the bench reads yellow anymore.

Install took almost no thought. The mounting screws are in the box, the 59-inch cord gets you to an outlet, and there’s no ballast nonsense to deal with. Plug and play, exactly as advertised.

The Build Is Light. Know That Going In.

Housing is thin aluminum, hold it once and you’ll feel it. It’s the kind of thing you mount once and leave alone, not something you want to be knocking into with a long board. And don’t plan on repositioning it often; the screw holes aren’t forgiving of repeated installs in the same ceiling.

The counterweight is the rating: up to 50,000 hours before any maintenance, and ETL certification behind it. LEDs don’t fail the way fluorescent tubes do. There’s no tube to swap, no flicker on cold mornings, no hum. So the thin shell matters less than it would on something with moving parts. If you’re hanging it from the included chains in a shed, go easy tightening things down.

4400 Lumens on 42 Watts, and Six in a Row

42W pulling 4400 lumens is the whole pitch, and it’s the number that makes this an easy swap from an old led shop light alternative or a two-lamp fluorescent fixture. hykolity rates it as equivalent to a 2-lamp fluorescent with up to a 70% cut in daily energy use. One fixture over a bench is plenty for me.

The linkable part is where this gets more interesting than a single light. Each unit plugs into the next, up to 6 of them off one outlet. If you’re doing led shop lights for a garage and you’ve got a two-car bay, you chain them down the length of the ceiling instead of running six separate cords to six separate plugs. That’s a real saver on a finished ceiling where you don’t want to add outlets.

Voltage range is 120V-277V, so it isn’t fussy, and there’s a reflector inside meant to spread the output evenly rather than dumping a hot stripe down the middle. The pull chain is the only control. No dimming, no app, no color temperature switch. 5000K is what you get. For a workbench that’s the right call, but if you wanted something warmer over a basement rec area, this isn’t the fixture.

The price has been steady for three months, no seasonal dip coming, no bundle deal on the horizon. If you need it, buy it now. Current pricing is on the product page.

Garage, Shed, Workbench. Not a Showroom.

If your fluorescent is flickering, humming, or just dead, this is the swap. Under $50, no wiring, done in twenty minutes. That’s the whole case for it, and for a workbench or shed, that case is airtight.

Who shouldn’t: anyone who wants a fixture that looks like a fixture. If this is going somewhere people see, the thin housing and bare pull chain will look like what they are. Same if you need dimming or warm light.

Pros

  • 4400 lumens at only 42W, more than enough over a single workbench
  • Install was plug and play: flush mount, plug in, pull the chain
  • Linkable up to 6 units off one outlet
  • 50,000 hour rating and ETL certified, no tubes or ballast to replace
  • Affordable and plugs in without any wiring changes required

Cons

  • Build quality is light, the housing feels inexpensive
  • 5000K only, no dimming and no warmer option
  • Pull chain is the only switch, so no wall control without extra work

What we’d improve

Two things the next version could fix without raising the cost much:

  • The thin housing, a slightly heavier gauge end cap would make it feel less disposable when you’re holding it over your head to mount it.
  • No wall-switch option, a hardwire bypass alongside the plug and pull chain would let people tie it into an existing garage switch instead of reaching for a chain in the dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hardwire it instead of using the plug?

It ships as plug and play with a 59-inch cord and a pull chain, and that’s the intended install. hykolity offers manufacturer-level support through your Amazon account for installation questions, so ask them before you cut anything.

Will it work in an unheated garage or shed?

LEDs don’t have the cold-start problem fluorescent tubes do, so there’s no warm-up flicker. It’s rated for residential and commercial spaces on 120V-277V. It isn’t a wet-rated fixture though, so keep it out of anywhere it’ll get rained on.

Do I need to buy extra cables to link them together?

The linking uses a plug-in connection designed into the fixtures, up to 6 units. Check the listing for what’s included in your pack before you plan a six-light run, since spacing between ceiling mounts will decide whether you need anything extra.

Loses most of a point on the housing, which feels cheap in the hand; the 4400 lumen output over my bench is what keeps the score high. Skip it if you need dimming or warm light, because 5000K and a pull chain is the whole interface. A sturdier shell and a hardwire option would make it a five.
