Schlage Sense Pro UWB Smart Deadbolt Lock: Worth It?

The Sense Pro looks incredible and unlocks hands-free with UWB, but the approach detection still isn't reliable enough for my front door.

I wanted this lock to just work, and it didn’t quite. The Schlage Sense Pro UWB Smart Deadbolt Lock is built to sense you walking up and pop the bolt before your hand hits the handle, and when it works it feels like the future. The problem is the “when it works” part. You can grab it at the current price on Amazon, but read this first, because the Sense Pro is a story of gorgeous hardware chasing software that isn’t fully baked.

Quick Verdict

The Sense Pro looks like the best smart lock I’ve mounted on my door, and then the UWB hands-free unlock let me down enough times that I couldn’t make it my daily driver. The hardware is a 5. The approach-detection experience isn’t there yet. If Schlage ships a firmware fix, this jumps to the front of the pack.

Buy if you:

  • Live in Apple Home and already own an Apple TV 4K or HomePod for Thread
  • Want Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock on your iPhone or Apple Watch
  • Care more about a clean keypad-free look than perfect hands-free reliability
  • Are fine updating firmware and living on the bleeding edge of UWB

The UWB Dream vs. My Front Door

Schlage Sense Pro UWB Smart Deadbolt Lock: Worth It? — photo 1

On paper this is the smart lock I’ve been waiting years for. In my two weeks with it, the UWB fired reliably maybe half the time, and a hands-free lock with a coin-flip success rate is just a regular lock with extra steps.

What Schlage Converge Is Supposed To Do

Schlage Converge uses Ultra Wideband to read your speed, trajectory and motion toward the door. The idea is that the lock doesn’t just detect that your phone is nearby, it works out whether you actually intend to walk in. Once it confirms intent, the bolt is supposed to unlock exactly as you reach the handle. No app, no keypad, no tap. That’s the pitch, and it’s a smarter approach than a lock that fires the second your phone drifts within Bluetooth range.

The rest of the spec sheet is stacked too. It runs Matter over Thread, so it needs a Thread hub like an Apple TV 4K, a 2nd Gen HomePod or a HomePod Mini to pair with your iPhone and Apple Watch. It supports Apple Home Key for both hands-free unlock and NFC tap-to-unlock. Built-in WiFi lets you lock and unlock from anywhere, hold up to 250 access codes, and pull up history in the Schlage Home app.

Where The Sense Pro Falls Short In Real Use

The UWB unlock isn’t consistent, and that’s the whole ballgame. When you’re selling a lock on hands-free entry, it has to hit close to every time, because a hands-free lock that only unlocks sometimes is worse than a keypad you trust. I’d walk up expecting the bolt to retract as I reached the handle, and often enough I’d end up standing there waiting, or falling back to a Home Key tap on my iPhone instead. The potential is right there, you can feel it, and then a miss reminds you it’s still early days for this tech.

When I fell back to a Home Key tap, the lock responded instantly, NFC is fast and the app control over WiFi is rock solid. But tapping my phone to a deadbolt is something a $120 lock does. The Sense Pro costs more than that, and you’re paying the premium entirely for Converge. When Converge misses, you’re not getting what you paid for. That’s why it hasn’t replaced my previous lock on the front door.

The UWB Reliability Is the Critical Weakness

Hands-free is a promise, and right now it’s a promise the firmware hasn’t kept. The good news is that this is the kind of problem a software update can fix. UWB approach detection is a tuning problem more than a hardware one, and Schlage has all the sensors it needs already in the lock. If they dial in the Converge logic, the walk-up experience could go from frustrating to flawless without you buying anything new.

The catch is that I can only review the lock in front of me today, not the one that might exist after a future update. And today, the hands-free unlock is the weakest part of an otherwise excellent lock. That’s a strange sentence to write about a product whose entire headline feature is hands-free unlock, but here we are.

Who Should Buy The Sense Pro Right Now

Schlage Sense Pro UWB Smart Deadbolt Lock: Worth It? — photo 2

Deep Apple Home users are the clear audience. If you already run an Apple TV 4K or a HomePod for Thread, and your iPhone and Apple Watch clear the version cutoffs, the Sense Pro slots right into your setup with Home Key. You’ll get tap-to-unlock that’s rock solid, remote control over WiFi, and a matte black deadbolt that looks a lot more premium than most keypad locks bolted to a door.

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys living on the edge of new tech and doesn’t mind that the flagship feature is still maturing, you’ll be fine. If you need every unlock to be automatic and effortless from day one, this isn’t the lock to talk you into that yet.

How It Stacks Up Against The Aqara U400

The Aqara U400 is the obvious cross-shop, and it takes a different bet. Both are aimed at Apple Home fans who want Home Key on a clean lock, but the Sense Pro leans everything on UWB approach detection with Schlage Converge, while the U400 sticks to more proven unlock methods. Right now, that makes the U400 the safer everyday pick if reliability is your top priority, because the Sense Pro’s headline trick is the exact part that’s inconsistent.

Where the Sense Pro wins is ambition and ceiling. Nobody else is doing intent-based UWB unlocking this seriously, and if Schlage nails the firmware, it leapfrogs the field. It’s a “buy the potential” versus “buy the proven” decision, and only you know which camp you’re in.

My Advice Before You Order

Confirm your gear before you fall in love with the marketing. You need a Thread hub, and your iPhone has to be an 11 or newer on iOS 18.5+ for hands-free, with an Apple Watch Series 6 or later on watchOS 11.5+ if you want wrist unlock. Miss any of those and you lose the exact feature you’re paying a premium for.

Go in with your expectations calibrated: Home Key tap is your reliable daily driver, and UWB walk-up is the feature you’re rooting for rather than counting on. If Schlage ships the firmware fix, this becomes the lock I’d recommend without hesitation. If they don’t, you’ve spent a meaningful premium on a tap-to-unlock lock the Aqara U400 matches at a lower price. Check the live price on Amazon and run that comparison before you pull the trigger.

Pros

  • Premium matte black hardware that looks great on the door
  • Schlage Converge UWB is the smartest approach-based unlock concept out there
  • Full Apple Home Key support for hands-free and NFC tap-to-unlock
  • Built-in WiFi, up to 250 access codes, and history in the Schlage Home app
  • The reliability problem is the type of thing a firmware update can fix

Cons

  • The UWB hands-free unlock is inconsistent, and it’s the whole selling point
  • You end up falling back to a Home Key tap more often than you should have to
  • Requires a Thread hub plus fairly recent iPhone and Apple Watch to unlock everything
  • Best experience depends on a firmware update that hasn’t arrived yet

What we’d improve

Two things that would turn the Sense Pro from promising to unbeatable:

  • UWB tuning, the Converge approach detection needs a firmware pass so the bolt retracts reliably as you reach the handle instead of leaving you waiting.
  • Clearer fallback handoff, when the hands-free unlock misses, the transition to a Home Key tap should feel instant and obvious rather than like the lock ignored you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Sense Pro work without an Apple Thread hub?

No, hands-free and Home Key unlocking need a Thread-enabled hub like an Apple TV 4K, a 2nd Gen HomePod or a HomePod Mini. Without one, you can’t pair your iPhone and Apple Watch for the marquee features. The built-in WiFi still handles remote lock and app control.

Will the Sense Pro work with Android or Google Home?

The standout UWB and Home Key features are built around Apple’s ecosystem, so this lock is aimed squarely at iPhone and Apple Watch users. It’s a Matter lock, so basic Matter control is possible in other ecosystems, but you’d be buying it for the Apple hands-free experience. If you’re an Android household, this isn’t the lock designed for you.

Is there a monthly subscription to use it?

No subscription is needed for the core functions. You get local and remote control, up to 250 access codes, and history through the Schlage Home app on a secure WiFi network. Everything that matters for daily use works without a recurring fee.

Can the Sense Pro get firmware updates to fix the UWB?

Yes, and that’s the real hope here. The reliability issue is a tuning and software problem more than a hardware one, so a firmware update could improve the Converge approach detection meaningfully. Just know you’re buying based on that potential rather than a guaranteed timeline.

What iPhone do I need for the hands-free unlock?

You need an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 18.5+ for the Home Key hands-free unlock, and the iPhone SE and 16e are excluded. For Apple Watch hands-free, you need a Series 6 or later (not the SE) on watchOS 11.5+. Tap-to-unlock works on a wider range of older devices.

How does it handle guests who don’t have an iPhone?

You can create up to 250 custom access codes for guests, cleaners or family. Those work independently of the Apple hands-free features, so anyone can get in with a code even if they’re not in your Apple Home setup. You manage and revoke them through the Schlage Home app.

Should I buy the Sense Pro or the Aqara U400?

Pick the Aqara U400 if you want proven, reliable unlocking today, and the Sense Pro if you want the most ambitious UWB approach detection and are willing to wait on firmware. The U400 plays it safer, the Sense Pro chases a higher ceiling. Both are Apple-Home-focused locks, so it comes down to reliability now versus potential later.

Does it still unlock if my WiFi or internet goes down?

Schlage Sense Pro UWB Smart Deadbolt Lock: Worth It? — photo 3

Yes, local unlocking through Home Key tap and access codes doesn’t rely on your internet connection. WiFi is mainly for remote control, history and app management from away. So a dropped connection means you lose remote features, not the ability to physically get in your door.

Loses more than a full star because the UWB hands-free unlock, the entire reason to buy this over any other Home Key lock, fires inconsistently. The hardware itself is close to a 5, and tap-to-unlock is flawless. Anyone who needs automatic unlocking to work every time out of the box should wait for the firmware fix; nail that reliability and this becomes the smart lock to beat.
